IMPULSE: From a Black perspective

   Artist Statement

In this work, as I engage in the process of creating a work, the application of paint is important. There is a large emphasis on the backgrounds of this body of work. Whether it’s solid or layered with color, the backgrounds correlate with the subjects of the paintings and their presentation against a white wall. With the paintings mostly influenced by this dark place or state the artist experiences, the white wall serves a metaphor conveying his sense of feeling in being within a predominately white environment.

Color plays a large role in the function of these works as well. More specifically, the meaning of color is significant as it relays the personal perspective of emotion and feeling I suggest. Along with color, texture within the color aids in adding a sense of depth in these paintings.

The themes of these works come from different emotional experiences relating to both individual and universal experiences from my African American culture and the present. In painting these emotions, I enable myself to resolve feelings of disappointment, frustration, and confusion.
